This is super helpful. I went to my local needlework store to buy embroidery floss and was totally bewildered by all the offerings. I am so happy to see this particular tutorial. Thank you so much!

For patterns, also take a look a needlecrafter.com. In the design library, there are dozens of vintage patterns to download for free!

I just wanted to pop in with a huge ole' thank you for your blog. I decided about three weeks ago to take up embroidery again (I haven't since I was about 12 years old and that was about... a really long time ago). I searched the internet for stitching guides and tips and was really frustrated at the lack of information. But I pressed on and bought a hoop, some material (which has too loose a weave I'm discovering now so that would be one question I have - what to embroider on), floss and a pack of assorted needles. The one thing I could NOT find an answer on is how many strands of thread to use.

Of course I found you AFTER all this angsty searching and a dismal start but I'm ready to give it another go. I really, really appreciate your detail and especially the close up photos of each step of the stitch.

So again ~ Thank you. I'll stop gushing now.

Yes, needlecrafter.com is a great place to find copies of vintage patterns—all downloadable for personal use.

And, oops, I forgot about fabrics, so will do an embroidery basics—part 2 very soon.

Hi Janet,

I think I just stumbled upon your site, and I have already marked it in my favorites folder. I just went through all your pictures, and I wanted to know how you transfer the pattern on the fabric, could you please give us a tutorial about that. Would appreciate it a lot. BTW your blog and tutorials are just AWESOME and sooooooo helpful.
